August 28 Lunar Eclipse in Pisces: Some Endings Are Instructions

Partial lunar eclipse glowing copper-red above calm water beneath a star-filled night sky, representing the August 28, 2026 lunar eclipse in Pisces.

There is another eclipse coming, and before anyone starts circling August 28 on the calendar waiting for the sky to drop something on our heads, I want to begin with something I think we often forget about astrology. The exact day is not necessarily the whole story.

I have come to think of astrology as planting seeds. Sometimes an event happens right on cue, but very often something shifts quietly beneath the surface. A conversation happens. Something ends. A piece of information arrives. We suddenly see something we couldn't see before. Then six months or a year later we look back and realize, Ohhhh... that's where it started.

That is how I am looking at the August 28 Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces. And despite being partial, I don't think this one is going to be particularly quiet.

The eclipse occurs around 5° Pisces, opposite the Sun in Virgo. A lunar eclipse is essentially an amplified Full Moon, and Full Moons illuminate, culminate and release. Pisces makes that symbolism even stronger because Pisces is the final sign of the zodiac. It knows about endings, surrender, dissolution, compassion, spirituality, illusion and those strange spaces where we sometimes have difficulty distinguishing intuition from what we desperately want to believe.

This is also particularly significant because we are moving through the closing chapters of the Pisces-Virgo eclipse story as the Leo-Aquarius cycle begins to take over. There is something here about completion, but we aren't quite finished yet. What has run its course? What are we keeping alive through effort alone? What illusion are we finally willing to stop feeding? Where have we confused surrender with defeat?

There is another piece of this eclipse that I find fascinating. This eclipse falls on the North Node side of the story. The Leo solar eclipse we just experienced carried South Node symbolism, which speaks of release, karmic residue, excess and something from the past being stripped away. This eclipse feels different. There may still be endings, and I suspect for some people there absolutely will be, but some of those endings may actually be directional.

A door closes because another path is becoming available. Something leaves because there is finally room for whatever comes next.

That doesn't mean every ending will feel lovely and spiritually convenient while it is happening. Pisces is deeply emotional. This eclipse may bring grief, sensitivity, exhaustion or even the strange realization that something you once desperately wanted no longer belongs to the person you've become. But don't immediately assume that losing something means you've gone backward. Sometimes an ending is an instruction.

The Sun and Moon also form a very tight T-square with Uranus in Gemini, and this is where I think the astrology becomes particularly interesting collectively. Uranus awakens, but Uranus also disrupts. It breaks patterns, exposes cracks and accelerates change. It has very little interest in preserving something simply because we've always done it that way.

Around this eclipse and during the weeks that follow, I would pay attention to themes involving communication systems, technology, the internet, aviation, electricity and infrastructure. Disruptions or outages wouldn't surprise me. Neither would sudden revelations or pieces of information that change the conversation very quickly. Gemini rules information, and Uranus has a rather spectacular habit of kicking over the table when the old conversation has gone on long enough.

We are also coming out of a powerful Leo eclipse with the South Node moving through Leo. At its highest expression, Leo represents courageous, generous and creative leadership from the heart. Its shadow is ego, grandiosity, narcissism, misuse of power and the need to remain center stage.

For that reason, I think one of the stories continuing to unfold over the coming months will involve integrity in leadership. Political leaders, celebrities, royalty and public personalities may find themselves under a not so flattering brighter light. Because this lunar eclipse occurs in Pisces, I would include spiritual teachers and spiritual institutions in that conversation too.

Who has actually been serving? Who has been performing service while primarily serving themselves? I have a feeling we haven't finished watching some very public masks fall.

And perhaps something even more interesting happens if spiritual institutions or teachers begin losing some of their authority. It doesn't necessarily mean we become less spiritual. We may become more so. People begin reclaiming a direct relationship with the sacred instead of outsourcing it. Hold onto that thought, because it comes back in a rather beautiful way in the Sabian Symbol for this eclipse.

Then there is water.

Pisces is water. Neptune is water. And water feels like one of the strongest collective symbols surrounding this eclipse. We are already witnessing drought and extreme heat in parts of the world while other regions experience excessive rainfall.

There is also an interesting additional layer in the original interpretation of this eclipse involving Gonggong, the distant dwarf planet named after a Chinese water deity associated with floods and disorder. Some astrologers place Gonggong close enough to the eclipse degree to add another symbolic layer to the already strong Piscean water story. I wouldn't use that alone to predict flooding, but alongside an eclipse in Pisces and the other water symbolism in this chart, I think it is worth noting.

Does that mean astrology can tell us exactly where a flood will happen? Of course not. But from a mundane astrology perspective, I would absolutely keep my eye on stories involving water, oceans, flooding, drought, water supply and the environmental consequences of extreme weather. There is an uncomfortable irony here too. Land hardened by drought often cannot absorb sudden heavy rainfall, so too little water can very quickly become too much.

Pisces and Neptune are also traditionally associated with oil, so stories involving oil supply, prices, petroleum or the oceans may continue surfacing as well.

Uranus has an eruptive, discontinuous quality. Combined with eclipse symbolism, I wouldn't be surprised to see heightened attention around earthquakes, volcanic activity or other sudden geological events during this period. I want to be careful with that statement because mundane astrology describes archetypal weather. It doesn't give us permission to predict catastrophe or manufacture fear. But when several symbols begin repeating the same theme, I pay attention. And the repeated theme here is disruption and release of pressure.

That seems true of the Earth right now. It also seems rather true of us.

Another piece I find particularly significant is the Jupiter-Saturn trine. At the time of the eclipse this aspect is already building strongly, and just three days later, on August 31, Jupiter at 13°41′ Leo will perfect its trine to Saturn at 13°41′ Aries.

Jupiter and Saturn began their current synodic cycle with their conjunction in December 2020, so this opening trine feels like an important checkpoint in a much larger story.

How far have we come since then? What did we learn? What didn't we learn? What became impossible to unknow? What did those years teach us about governments, institutions, community, health, work, time, family and ourselves?

Saturn asks for the reality check. Jupiter asks what becomes possible next. So perhaps the question isn't whether we can somehow return to what existed before. Perhaps the more interesting question is, knowing what we know now, what are we going to build instead?

And amid all of this enormous astrology about awakening, systems, consciousness, endings and beginnings, there sits the Virgo Sun quietly rolling up her sleeves.

I rather love Virgo for this because Virgo isn't terribly interested in our magnificent spiritual theories if none of them survive contact with Tuesday morning. 😂 Virgo wants to know what you're actually doing differently. How are you living? What does your morning look like? Where does your attention go? How are you caring for your body? What are you creating? Who are you spending your time with? What does your spirituality look like while you're washing the dishes?

This may actually be one of my favorite messages within the entire eclipse. The sacred is moving into the ordinary.

But then I came to the Sabian Symbol associated with this eclipse degree, "A Church Bazaar," and I couldn't stop thinking about it.

The traditional interpretation speaks about bringing the spiritual into ordinary human interactions, and there is something beautiful in that. But the image took me somewhere else entirely.

I didn't see a cheerful little church market.

I saw a church that had closed its doors because there were no longer enough people sitting in its pews. And outside, spread across tables, were all the things that once lived within it. The books. The statues. The linens. The candles. The relics. Objects that had once been held inside a structure that told us they were sacred.

And suddenly the question became: What remains sacred when the structure that told us what was sacred disappears?

That feels extraordinarily Piscean to me, particularly at a time when we may be questioning not only political and social institutions, but spiritual ones too.

Perhaps what is dissolving isn't spirituality at all.

Perhaps it is the container.

The church closes, but prayer remains. The institution loses its authority, but the longing for something greater remains. The relic leaves the altar and finds itself sitting on an ordinary wooden table, yet whatever meaning it truly carried hasn't necessarily disappeared.

Maybe we are being asked to decide for ourselves what was genuinely sacred and what was simply declared sacred because an institution told us so.

And this is where I see Pisces and Virgo having the most extraordinary conversation.

Pisces asks what is eternal. Virgo sorts through what remains.

What do we pick up from that table and carry forward because it still contains truth? What do we leave behind because it belonged to the institution, the tradition or an old story we no longer need?

Perhaps this is part of the larger spiritual shift happening now. People begin reclaiming a direct relationship with the sacred instead of outsourcing it to a priest, teacher, guru, institution or anyone else who claims to stand between them and the divine.

And maybe that is why the sacred moving into the ordinary matters so much.

It isn't twenty minutes of meditation followed by twenty-three hours and forty minutes of unconsciousness. It isn't simply talking about consciousness. It is living it.

The divine at the market. Grace in the kitchen. Consciousness in a conversation with your neighbor. Love expressed through something completely mundane. Perhaps enlightenment was never supposed to remove us from ordinary life. Perhaps ordinary life is exactly where we're meant to practice it.

Maybe the sacred isn't disappearing at all. Maybe it is being returned to us.

One of the things I will personally be watching over the coming months is polarization. When systems destabilize, people often cling harder to whatever makes them feel safe. Fear gets louder. Control gets louder. Anger gets louder. But something else can become louder too. Compassion, community, creativity and service. People growing food, making things with their hands, helping neighbors, changing how they live, walking away from lives that no longer resemble them and choosing smaller, quieter, more meaningful ways of being.

Both realities can exist simultaneously. The question is which one we choose to feed.

That doesn't mean ignoring suffering or pretending everything is wonderful. Consciousness isn't denial. There is a very big difference between being informed about darkness and allowing darkness to become the only thing we can see.

So between now and August 28, I would simply observe. Don't force anything. Notice what is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Notice which conversations suddenly feel finished. Notice what information surfaces. Notice where your intuition becomes louder. Notice what your body is telling you. Notice what you're strangely no longer afraid to lose.

And just as importantly, notice what is beginning to feel alive.

Because this eclipse isn't only about what is leaving. It is a North Node eclipse. Something is pointing forward. We may simply have to release enough of what we've been carrying to finally see where it is pointing.

And remember, eclipse seasons are seeds. Don't demand the whole story from August.

Journal it. Watch it. Pay attention to the odd little synchronicities, conversations, dreams, endings, beginnings and things that suddenly seem important for reasons you cannot quite explain yet. Then come back to these weeks six months from now, a year from now, even eighteen months from now.

I have a feeling some of us will read those pages and realize that the seemingly insignificant things happening now weren't insignificant at all. They were the first small movements of a life already trying to become something else.

In the meantime, stay close to the ordinary. Make something. Grow something. Help someone. Go outside. Listen more carefully. Rest when your body asks.

And when the world becomes impossibly loud, find somewhere quiet enough to hear yourself again.

Sometimes the revolution begins there.... in your Stillpoint.
